The Museum

If you are planning to visit Marseille and you like museums, the MuCEM is made for you! It is the first museum dedicated to the Mediterranean civilizations of the 21st century. Built as part of Marseille Provence - European Capital of Culture, the museum opened its doors on June 7, 2013. It is now one of the most visited museums in Marseille with nearly 2 million visitors per year.

Between Fort Saint-Jean and the Marseille Cathedral, you can enjoy an unbeatable view of the city from its seafront. A 115-metre footbridge links J4 to Fort Saint Jean, a fortress that is inseparable from Marseille's history. While a second 70-metre footbridge connects with the church of Saint-Laurent, a figure in the Panier (old town) district.

The MuCEM: three parts dedicated to civilizations

The museum is divided into 3 distinct sites: J4, Fort St Jean and the last site, located at La Belle de Mai: the Conservation and Resource Center. With its 3 sites, it offers you nearly 40,000 m2 of space dedicated to the civilizations of the Mediterranean basin with nearly one million works.
On the former port mall, the 15,500 m² J4 houses an exhibition area, an auditorium, a bookshop and a panoramic restaurant. It is one of the most attractive restaurants in Marseille with the most beautiful view!
At its heart, 3600 m² of exhibition space on two levels to present the major events of the MUCEM.

The first level is devoted to the Mediterranean world, its diversity and complexity. The second floor contains 2000 m² for temporary exhibitions.
Fort Saint Jean dates from the 12th century and has been completely renovated. It is connected to J4 by a footbridge and will offer you a magnificent view of the whole city. Among the activities in Marseille, it is certainly one of those that offer the most beautiful view! You can stroll through the landscaped garden, admire the Cathedral of the Major, and why not enjoy outdoor shows and events in Marseille. A café and a shop have also been set up. The Le Panier district is also connected to the Fort Saint Jean by a footbridge. The Conservation and Resource Centre takes you behind the scenes of the museum.

The MUCEM is the perfect place to discover an exhibition in Marseille.

MUCEM is open every day except Tuesday.

Opening hours are modified according to the times of year:

    From November 5 to April 30: 11am - 6pm
    From May 2 to July 6: 11am - 7pm
    From July 7 to September 2: 10am - 8pm
    From September 3 to November 4: 11am - 7pm

Remember to pick up your MUCEM tickets at the ticket office to avoid queues. The prices are 9,50€ and 5€ at a reduced price.
