Le Cadenet, a Luberon's treasure
Discover this village of Provence
In the Luberon Regional Natural Park, Cadenet is a small town of 4000 inhabitants located on the right bank of the Durance, between Pertuis and Lourmarin. It is a typical village of Provence steeped in history, as attested by the remains of its medieval castle. Thanks to its mild Mediterranean weather, it is possible to spend a pleasant stay all year round. This idyllic location, typical of the most beautiful villages in Provence, attracts new inhabitants and tourists every year and we can easily understand them!
The city's heritage
Cadenet comes from Candellence, which means "inhabitants of a great place". And it is truethat this small town is full of treasures of all kind! From the ruined castle, the view is breathtaking over the Luberon, but also over the Sainte Victoire and the Alpilles. Also in the heights, cave dwellings are dug directly into the rock. These dwellings were used as a refuge for the Vaudois du Lubéron, a dissident religious movement of the 16th century. These places were used until the 1960s by the population. Moreover, the toponymy underlines this high position that characterized the city.
Castrum Cadenatum Castle
The Cadenet's heritage is definitely worth a visit. Starting with its medieval castle, the 11th century Castrum Cadenatum, which was ravaged by the horrors of history and was destroyed several times. It was never restored, but was dismantled stone by stone during the 19th century. In the 1990s, the property was finally rearranged and you can still see its ruins today.
Saint Etienne Church
It was built from the 12th century, but its construction lasted several centuries. You must absolutely see the baptismal font made of a fragment of a Roman sarcophagus from the 3rd century AD. This marble piece represents Ariadne's awakening in Naxo.
The church of Saint Etienne also has a room where sacred objects are displayed
The Basketry Museum
This museum offers an original collection of tools and various objects used in work or everyday life. Billhooks, bats, shears... More than a thousand objects illustrate the life of a Provençal village in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The markets
Another important part of the patrimony to discover is this Provençal market, which is held every Monday since 1556, the date on which it was established by a patent letter from Charles IX. If you like typical markets, you can visit the many markets around during your holidays in Provence and taste typical products of the region.
